Saturday saw the Under 9B team playing Birkdale in their second match of the season. Having steadily improved last Wednesday at the Barlborough Tournament we hoped to raise our game even further against a good Birkdale unit.
The first half was extremely close with both sides having good possession. Adam S and Matthew W both had some promising runs, as did Russell F who powered through the Birkdale defence to score a much deserved try late in the first half.
In the second half the S. Anselm's boys were beginning to lose concentration in defence and let through consecutive easy tries. Keeping the flat line and the structure around the breakdown is crucial and occasionally a Birkdale player escaped from what appeared to be a very congested breakdown. Isaac B had a much improved game on the wing making two superb tackles, Tom H, John B and Teyfik K did well in the forwards and Wilson W again played well at scrum-half. Some of the younger players; Charles B, Theodore F and James C, are all beginning to understand the game better and with all of this match experience a year early will certainly stand them in good stead for next year.
There is promise for this young team and with some extra tackling practice and breakdown shape there will be many more tries to come.
Final Score - 5 - 40
