Year 2 Visit to Old House Museum

Year 2 have recently enjoyed an interesting morning finding out more about life in the Victorian Times at the Old House Museum in Bakewell. They took part in a typical ‘wash day’ and had to clean an item of clothing using traditional techniques from over 150 years ago. First they removed the tough stains with soap and a wash board and then they used a dolly stick to wash their garment in the dolly tub. They worked together to use the mangle to squeeze the water out into a bucket and pegged the washing on the line to dry. Finally, they pretended to heat two old irons on the stove and tried their very best to get rid of all those creases! We all agreed that Mondays must have been very hard work in those days!
The children were also given a guided tour around the rest of the museum and enjoyed spotting ‘rats’ hidden in each room. A fantastic morning was had by all!
