Year 4 Bushcraft Weekend

Year 4 Bushcraft Weekend

All of year 4 pupils embarked on a Bushcraft weekend that took place in the grounds belonging to the Wildgoose family.

After the initial introduction they were shown how to make shelters from what was available in the woods. They then spent the next few hours constructing their shelters, some of the girls even managing to decorate the inside. Unfortunately the weather in the afternoon was very much against us and it was felt that it would be too cold and wet over night for the shelters to be used to sleep under. It was therefore slightly frustrating when the forecast rain did not turn up over night. Early the next morning, all were provided with a hearty breakfast to prepare for the day ahead. After this, the many different ways of lighting fires were demonstrated, including using a firestick, bow and drill and flint and steel. They then went off to collect the wood that they would be using to build their fire, this being very important as they were to be cooking their own lunch over the fire. Despite the rain, all groups managed to construct and light some fantastic fires and cooked some delicious lamb and peppers kebabs. All returned to school exhausted but I’m sure more aware of survival techniques.
