To complement and develop the theme of ‘Healthy Eating’ Mrs Stubley came to school to talk to Year 7 on Friday afternoon.
An informative slideshow followed with ideas enhanced by getting the children involved: answering questions, taking part in a quiz, tasting salt water and picking up bags of sugar or plates of ‘fat’ to make the point of what is in some of the foods we eat frequently, but probably don’t actually consider what we are consuming.
The main themes were:
• the importance of food on our health now and in the future
• the importance of all of us taking control of our food choices
• a focus on processed food to demonstrate what can be ‘hidden’, such as in cereals and flavoured drinks
• how much sugar/fat and salt can be consumed without thinking about it
The talk was concluded by asking all children to think about what small changes they could make…….. and it was heartening to hear all of them came up with ideas of what they might try. For those that stayed on there was then chance to look at a few healthy options: the day children and boarders who did so left snacks of mandarins, carrots and bottled water!
