A fun filled and informative evening was had by all as the parents of Year 4 and 5 pupils attended a Science evening with a difference. Our Year 8 pupils led the evening by performing many different experiments and demonstrations, explaining the theory behind them and answering many (often very tricky!) questions from the parents. There’s a well-known saying; ‘there is no better way to learn something than to teach it to someone else’ and this was very much the philosophy for the evening. It provided the students with a valuable opportunity to test their own knowledge and revise in preparation for their Scholarship or Common Entrance examinations later in the academic year. Parents were very impressed with the confidence, eloquence and knowledge of the students. Picture 1: Lewis and Annie explain about fractional distillation of red wine (some thought it was a bit of a waste!)
Picture 2: Investigating speed, distance ad time. Picture 3: Bringing out the competitive side of some of the parents. Building boats to hold as many marbles as possible before sinking. Picture 4: Fran and Theo teaching Mrs Whawell about reacting alkali metals with water and then testing the gas given off. Picture 5: A very visual demonstration of the pH scale.
Picture 6: The one they dreaded – a test of resting heart rate and then heart rate after exercise. More photos:
