In Gardening Club, just before half term, the pupils decided to make hedgehog houses in the hope it may be of some use for our little endangered friends, as they prepare to hibernate over this winter period.

Each group set about finding an area that was sheltered and then dug a shallow trough which they carefully filled with dried leaves. Using wooden blocks, they then created a south westerly facing entrance, complete with three layers of wooden blocks for walls.  A large sheet of plywood was put over the top, with lots of heavy stones and logs carefully placed to weigh the structure down and make it secure. The final part was to collect lots of twigs, moss and dried leaves to camouflage it from predators.

Let’s hope our spiky little garden friends like their new 5-star homes!
