The ‘war to end all wars’, the Great War, has been the focus of History lessons this term for our College historians in Derwent.
Students have learnt about the causes of this conflict, the stalemate of trench warfare and how innovations in weaponry made defence the champion over attack with the Battle of the Somme being our main case study. To fully explore this period we have loaned a box of artefacts from the Imperial War Museum and each student has selected an item as a stimulus to investigate a different angle of this war. We were able to visit the Bakewell Old House Museum although not yet open for their season, to hear a very informative talk from Adrian and Michael and to see local items including a selection photos, medals, helmets, military hardware, rations and ration cards.
