On Sunday 27th, Abbeydale Tennis Club hosted the long-anticipated return of the annual College Tennis Open. Over 35 guests turned up for a day of cardio tennis, coaching and competitive play, all overseen by the kind and professional club staff. It was lovely to welcome families ranging from our Year 11 leavers, all the way down to our Year 8 starters, with siblings and parents also enjoying the activities.
After an engaging start, everyone managed to blow away the cobwebs and begin to get their eye back in! A picnic lunch followed and then, the afternoon consisted of competitive doubles games, spread across seven full sizes courts. The guests could decide whether they went the full competitive experience, or whether the ‘less competitive’ pool was the nicest way to spend the afternoon!
Many of our College students have been attending sessions at Abbeydale for three years now and the excellent coaching has developed our GCSE PE students into very proficient tennis players. After a couple of initial games, the Keen, Whawell and Kinlen families were looking strong, as were some of the student pairings, such as Henry P and Marlow C. It was a well-fought final, with Mr Nuttall and Josh N facing Kai E and Annabelle H-P. The Nuttalls emerged victorious!
There were equally engaging games in the less competitive pool and it was lovely seeing some of the parents pairing up and facing their children!
It was a lovely day and our thanks go to John Gledden and his amazing staff for their time and the use of their facilities and to Guy Salmon Land Rover for sponsoring the event. Thank you to all of the families who came to support the day and we look forward to welcoming you back next year!
