Interested in a Scholarship?
We have a number of Scholarships on offer at the College, here we describe them in more detail
Academic Scholarship
Profile
A potential College Academic Scholar should consistently achieve high attainment and effort grades across a range of subjects in their school reports. Assessment and examination grades should also show high levels of attainment across a range of subjects. A potential College Academic Scholar should be intellectually curious, have an appreciation of culture and an awareness of national and international affairs. Work ethic and diligence of approach are also important. A successful College Academic Scholar will be expected to maintain these levels of application throughout their time in the College.
Assessment
The School awards Academic Scholarships based on examination performance in the Summer Term of Year 8. Internal candidates will sit Common Entrance (or, where appropriate, scholarship papers). External candidates will be invited and to an interview with the Head and to sit examinations during exam week. This will include English, Maths, Science and standardised testing, with optional examinations in languages and non-core subjects. This will be discussed on a case-by-case basis with external applicants.
Award
Successful Academic Scholars will be awarded with a book token and have their name added to the scholarship board, which is displayed in school. Throughout their time in the College, their form tutors and Head of College will mentor and support Academic Scholars to ensure that they continue to maximise their attainment. Where appropriate, College Academic Scholars may be included in the School’s Gifted and Talented programme.
Art Scholarship
Profile
A suitable Art Scholarship candidate should have been attending extra Art sessions on a regular basis for at least a year prior to the Scholarship day. They will have a clear talent for observational drawing and will have worked on creative projects in an independent way outside of lesson time.
Assessment
Suitable applicants will be encouraged to apply by the Art Department or after discussing the possibility of an application with the Head of Art from the Summer Term of Year 7 onwards. On the Art Scholarship day in the Summer Term of Year 8, pupils should have with them a Portfolio of 10-12 pieces of work that they are proud of, along with their sketchbooks with evidence of further drawing. There is no need to mount up the portfolio work. The scholarship assessment will consist of a drawing test and an interview. Candidates will be expected to talk about favourite Artists, Art Galleries they have visited and artwork that they have created.
Award
Successful scholars will be given extra 1:1 mentoring outside of lesson time, where feedback can be given on independent work done at home. These extra sessions will take place twice a term. A gift card to spend on art materials will be presented on Speech Day. It is an expectation that a successful College Art Scholar would elect to study either Fine Art or Textiles at GCSE, otherwise the benefits of 1:1 mentoring will be withdrawn after Year 9.
Drama Scholarship
Profile
A suitable Drama Scholarship candidate shows a passionate interest in, and talent for, dramatic performance. They are likely to have performed in prior productions, either in or out of school, and will be keen to take advantage of opportunities to develop their skills.
Assessment
Suitable applicants will be encouraged to apply by the Head of Drama or after discussing the possibility of an application with them from the Summer Term of Year 7 onwards. College Drama Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of a successful audition and interview. The Drama Scholarship day is in the Summer Term of Year 8. Candidates should prepare a 2 minute monologue from a play to perform off by heart and be able to discuss their choice and interpretation. The interview will also cover their interest and participation in theatre to date.
Award
Successful College Drama Scholars will receive termly mentor meetings with the Head of Drama. They will be encouraged to attend theatre visits and suitable drama workshops throughout the year to develop their skills and support their GCSE work. College Drama Scholars are expected to take GCSE Drama and play an active part in College Productions and Arts Evening events, otherwise the benefits of 1:1 mentoring will be withdrawn after Year 9. College Drama Scholars are also encouraged to get involved backstage where appropriate for Prep School productions.
Music Scholarship
Profile
A potential College Music Scholar should be a dedicated and determined musician already at a significant standard who displays the potential to further attain higher grades or subsequent levels. They should have a passion for their instrument/voice, a willingness to learn and a curiosity for all things musical, enjoying the opportunity to perform both as a soloist and within ensembles.
Assessment
Suitable applicants will be encouraged to apply by the Director of Music or after discussing the possibility of an application with them from the Summer Term of Year 7 onwards. Music Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a successful audition and interview; there is no written paper. Candidates usually offer two instruments, at least one at Grade 5 or higher of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, although it is not necessary to have taken the exam. They should prepare two contrasting pieces for each instrument, plus an unaccompanied traditional song up to 1 minute in length. The audition is designed to discover potential and musical interests that can be further developed within regular weekly school ensembles plus solo opportunities, which include both formal and informal concerts throughout the year.
Award
College Music Scholars will receive free weekly music tuition in their first instrument. This lesson is 40 minutes in length (a school period) and is delivered by a S. Anselm’s specialist peripatetic teacher. A letter to confirm this award will be presented at Speech day and this provision will continue until the end of the Lent Term of Year 11. Music scholars are expected to undertake GCSE Music or the free music lessons awarded will cease after Year 9.
Sport Scholarship
Profile
A potential College Sport Scholar must be currently playing and training at least at club or representative level in their given sport(s). The sports chosen must be one of the core school sports, which consist of: cricket, football (soccer), hockey or netball. They must maintain the highest of standards of appearance, effort and attitude both in school lessons and matches. Preferably pupils must be at a high standard in at least two of the core school sports. Considerations will be made for pupils who also participate in other sports.
Applications
Suitable applicants will be encouraged to apply by the Games Department or after discussing the possibility of an application with the Director of Sport. We encourage this to happen from Year 7. Applications will be considered alongside a written reference from club or representative coach alongside supplementary video evidence of them training and playing in their given sport(s). Pupils will then be invited in to a practical activity and short interview with the Director of Sport in the Summer Term of Year 8. Full application deadline is by Summer half term of each academic year, however submissions can be made in the Year before entry to the College.
Commitment
Pupils must maintain the highest of standards when training and representing the school in lessons and fixtures. They must follow and record progress of their personal training plan and seek advice from their coach at their regular meeting. Pupils must represent the school when selected in any sporting fixture as and when required as well as continuing to play at the same or higher level in their chosen sport(s). The school must be informed of any changes/updates to their external sports commitments and of any clashes with the school calendar. All College Sport Scholars will be required to take the PE GCSE, otherwise the benefits of the Sports Scholarship will be withdrawn after Year 9.
Award
On award of a College Sport Scholarship pupils would receive a Strength and Conditioning training plan and a 1:1 meeting with a mentor. Mentor’s will be able to provide advice, support and guidance in areas such as nutrition and sports psychology.
