On Tuesday, GCSE geographers in Kinder and Arkwright headed out to conduct river fieldwork investigations in two locations: Burbage Brook, as it flows through the Longshaw Estate and then at the River Derwent at Calver.
The aim of the fieldwork was to develop a first hand understanding of rivers and the techniques used to measure them. At each location, students measured flow rate, sediment size and shape and a number of other variables to help identify processes such as weathering, erosion and natural river transport.
The data gathered will be analysed more closely back in the classroom, in order to relate what was observed to river theories.
