What a fantastic start to Year One’s ‘King of the Castle’ project!

The children have immersed themselves in castle facts and are now experts on Motte and Bailey Castles. They worked in teams to create prototypes out of Lego before they creatively built life-like models out of various classroom materials. Each castle was complete with all of the necessary buildings in the bailey, the keep on top of the motte and (just to ensure authenticity) floating faeces in the moat …

Just when they thought things could not get more exciting, we embarked on an adventure to Bolsover Castle. Fortunately for us, the castle was closed to the public when we visited, so the children were able to role play battles and explore the grand rooms of ‘The Little Castle’ at their own leisure.

It was definitely a day to remember!
