Meal times & food

Our dining room is at the heart of S. Anselm’s and mealtimes are one of the highlights of the school day. With the energy our children expend every day, at each mealtime they are ready for delicious food that is both sustaining and nutritious.

We believe in family-style dining.  At lunch and supper, meals of served from the head of each table by a member of staff who eats with the children, encouraging manners, conversation and a relaxed atmosphere.  Grace is said before and after eating.

The children are encouraged to ‘try everything’ in the junior years, expanding their experiences and, as they head towards the senior years they are allowed to visit the varied salad bar.

Menus run in a four weekly rota so the children have a wide variety of food to try. All our meat is sourced locally and a large proportion of it is organic, while we have regular deliveries of fresh food and fish ensuring a seasonal intake. All the dishes are made freshly on site by our excellent catering team.

Each of the four School Houses has its own trophy cabinets on display and the Dining Room is always decorated for special occasions and each passing season.

Our catering team make huge efforts to ensure celebrations are marked, preparing pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, Chinese menus for Chinese New Year and, of course, plenty of cakes for birthdays and the victorious house point winners at every exeat.

The children are proud of the delicious match teas we offer opposing schools and appreciate not only the meals but also the tasty snacks and packed lunches prepared by our dedicated team.

Breakfast for the boarders is seen as a vital start to the day with a wide variety of cold and cooked options on offer. The children can have cereal, toast, cold milk or tea to drink plus a variety of hot daily choices.

The ‘full English’ breakfast on a Sunday is a very popular school tradition as is the traditional Roast Supper every Sunday evening, at which boarders’ families are welcomed once a month to join staff and children. This is often the opportunity for a lively and engaging impromptu performance from the children.
