Mrs Seddon and Mr Mace were royally entertained by some enchanting Year 6 and 7 pupils earlier this week. Sadly, due to Covid restrictions, we were unable to invite parents to this year’s Public Reading Competition nor could we invite a judge from another school. Thankfully, Mrs Seddon stepped up to the breach to assist with the judging and both she and I were bowled over by the quality of the children’s reading. It was a balmy evening so we felt that we should take advantage of the weather and set up outside. This meant the children would have to work hard to ensure that their voices travelled across the Headmaster’s Lawn as they had strong competition from the pigeons and blackbirds!

A range of extracts were recited beautifully. Students read from novels such as, Roald Dahl’s ‘Boy’,  Gerald Durrell’s ‘My Family and Other Animals’ and AA Milne’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’. Poems such as ‘Timothy Winters’ by Charles Causley and ‘Rockets’ by Guy Kennedy were also read with great skill and fluency. It was very tough to judge, and the decisions made regarding the prize winners were very close indeed. I cannot emphasise enough how impressed we were with the children’s aplomb and technical ability, it really was a treat to sit in the sun and be entertained. The children were a credit to their parents and their school. Congratulations to all the participants and well done to the winners below!
