Sport
Sports are an integral part of life at S. Anselm’s and are approached with passion and enthusiasm.
S. Anselm’s Preparatory School is well recognised on the preparatory circuit locally, regionally and nationally as having impressive sports teams, coached to a consistently high level in every age group.
We are proud of our ‘competitive sports for all’ policy at S. Anselm’s, with every child representing the school in teams for each of the major sports, regularly, throughout each term.
Our Physical Education programme stretches each pupil to their full potential; developing leadership, character, knowledge and performance in each of the core sports. In addition, all Prep pupils are screened to develop their Functional Movement skills (FMS UK) and given an individualised training plan to develop their physical literacy and wellbeing. Our pre-school and Pre-Prep benefit from this programme too with the Movement Play system incorporated into their PE lessons.
In the past three years, S. Anselm’s teams have reached ISA National Finals in hockey and netball and IAPS National Finals in swimming, shooting, athletics and riding. Pupils able in sport are challenged and given opportunities to perform at the highest level, with a number of pupils every year being selected for the Derbyshire County Hockey Development and Academy Squads. In the past year, pupils have also been selected for the Derbyshire County Cricket Squad.
The school’s sporting talent has also been recognized by a variety of senior schools, with S. Anselm’s pupils being awarded sports scholarships at Malvern College, Repton, Oakham, Oundle, Rugby, Uppingham and Cheltenham Ladies. To support our Sports Scholars we provide Functional Mobility training using the Bridge.
The excellent facilities and talented coaching staff ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy.
The major sports are played in the following terms:
Michaelmas Term | Football and hockey |
Lent Term | Netball, hockey and cross country |
Summer Term | Cricket, tennis and athletics |
Our annual Mud Run held in November, with its much anticipated water jump, and the Brailich Hill run across the Peak District moors are major events in our sporting calendar.
In addition to our main sports, S. Anselm’s fields teams in Rugby Union and Rugby Sevens, equestrian events, shooting and swimming. Gymnastics, badminton, basketball, circuits, water polo, riding, sailing, mountain biking and shooting are regularly enjoyed by both boarders and day pupils throughout the school, through clubs and extras.
S. Anselm’s Millennium Sports Hall, 20m swimming pool and full sized all-weather Astro Turf pitch provide outstanding facilities for organised indoor sport and free-time use, whatever the weather, throughout the daytime and evening seven days a week. We also have five hard tennis courts and a large games fields with several pitches.
Parents and families are welcome to come and support their children in sporting fixtures, whether they are playing at home or away, as well as attending sporting galas and house tournaments. All pupils after each match are invited to a Match tea where they sit with the opposition players. Parents are also invited to a Parents’ match tea in the school library.
Team sheets for all school fixtures are posted in the parents’ password-protected area of this website.
