Boarding at S. Anselm’s is far more than a place to stay – it is a vibrant, caring community where pupils thrive.

We offer flexi, weekly and full boarding, giving families the flexibility to choose the option that best suits their needs.

Flexi boarding

Flexi boarding is ideal for families needing adaptable arrangements due to changing work schedules, busy home lives or school commitments. It also offers pupils the chance to experience boarding life gradually, enjoy extra study time or take part in evening activities.

Weekly boarding

Weekly boarders stay from Monday to Friday and return home at weekends. This option provides structure during the school week while preserving family time, offering an excellent balance for pupils and parents alike.

Full boarding

Full boarding provides a complete boarding experience throughout the week and weekends. It suits pupils who enjoy a structured routine and a busy programme of activities, while providing the perfect preparation for children as they prepare for the next stage of their education.

Boarding life

Evenings in the boarding house are full of energy and opportunity.

After school clubs and activities range from swim club, sailing and gymnastics to Mandarin, film society, den building, rock band and cookery. The programme changes each term to reflect the seasons and keep life varied and exciting.

After clubs and supper, pupils settle into supervised prep, followed by time for music practice. House parents then guide pupils through a calm, structured bedtime routine – showers, quiet reading and lights‑out – ensuring everyone is well‑rested for the next day.

Well-loved traditions are woven into boarding life, from seizing seasonal opportunities for sledging and building snow sculptures, Bonfire Night, the Christmas Boarders’ Feast, pancake races and the ever-popular Boarders’ Got Talent.

We offer a dynamic programme of weekend activities.

Weekend activities are many and varied providing the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. Opportunities include visits to the nearby towns and cities, visits to Chatsworth House, ice skating, outdoor activities, or simply enjoying a relaxing Sunday walk in the local Peak District countryside.

Boarding at S. Anselm’s is rooted in a strong sense of community, where pupils feel supported, valued and part of a close-knit family. Staff are always available, with duty teams on hand every evening from 5–10pm, giving boarders plenty of opportunities to share any concerns or ideas with a trusted adult.

Boarders also have a voice through the half‑termly committee meetings, where they can suggest improvements and discuss their experiences. The result is a nurturing environment where children feel listened to, cared for and confident in their daily life.

Boarders stay in cosy dormitories within the historic school house, creating a warm and homely atmosphere. Rooms are bright, cheerful and thoughtfully decorated to help pupils feel comfortable and settled.

During free time, the boarders’ common room provides a relaxed space to watch films, play games or enjoy time with friends – complete with a big‑screen “home cinema” feel for weekly movie nights. Beyond the school house, boarders have access to an exceptional range of facilities, including classrooms, music rooms, sports areas, the swimming pool, library and more, allowing them to enjoy a rich and varied evening programme.

Meals

Meals are a highlight of boarding life, with a family style approach in the Dining Hall that brings pupils together across year groups. Breakfasts and suppers offer a generous range of hot and cold options, while snacks and fruit are available throughout the day to keep pupils fuelled and healthy.

Food matters are regularly discussed in the boarders’ committee, ensuring pupils can share feedback directly with house parents and the catering team. Special occasions are celebrated with themed meals and beautifully decorated dining spaces.
