As Deputy Head of S. Anselm’s, Alison Whawell is approaching her 15th year at the school, a milestone that reflects both her commitment to education and her deep belief in what this community offers. Alison’s 30 years of teaching and leadership experience across the UK and Hong Kong have shaped an approach grounded equally in practical classroom expertise and strong academic study. Alongside her degree and PGCE, she has continued to learn throughout her career, completing an MA at the Institute of Education, UCL, followed by an MBA in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Leicester, while teaching.

Alison is dedicated to helping young people achieve their best and take pride in fostering an environment where every pupil feels supported, challenged and inspired. She sees her role as supporting others in their achievements, whether that learning happens in the classroom or beyond it. Being part of a sports team, a musical ensemble or a debating group all play a vital part in developing the whole person. Confidence, emotional intelligence and the ability to navigate an increasingly digital world are essential skills for young people in the 21st century, and Alison believes our school must nurture these deliberately and thoughtfully.

As the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead, Alison works closely with staff to ensure safeguarding is understood, embedded and lived across the community. She also support teachers in their professional development, organising inset and guiding colleagues through QTS and ECT pathways.

Alison’s belief in global awareness is rooted in her decade living and teaching in Hong Kong, a period rich in culture, travel and professional challenge that continues to influence her outlook. Returning to the Peak District has been equally meaningful to her. This remarkable environment is a daily reminder of the importance of sustainability and of our shared responsibility to help young people understand their place in the world and the impact they can have within it.
