Welcome to our Junior Prep, where pupils build strong foundations for future learning.

This is a vibrant and nurturing stage of school life, where children begin to take greater ownership of their studies and discover more about their individual strengths.

Small class sizes allow close monitoring of academic progress and personal development, ensuring every child feels known, supported and challenged.

Pupils are encouraged to express their ideas freely, work both independently and collaboratively, and grow into confident, well‑rounded individuals who embrace new opportunities with enthusiasm.

LIFE IN PREP

A typical school day

Lessons

In the Junior Forms, most lessons are taught by the form teacher, with specialist teachers visiting for French, Spanish, art, music and sport.

Assemblies

Assemblies take place throughout the week and include singing, celebrations of achievement, performances and themed talks.

Break times

Younger pupils enjoy climbing frames, games and free play, supported by a wide range of sports equipment. Musical ensembles and clubs often run during breaks.

Lunch

A home-cooked two‑course lunch is served in the dining room, with pupils seated in their Houses alongside staff. Special themed meals mark occasions throughout the year, and the weekly Thursday roast is a favourite!

Sporting fixtures

Sports fixtures for junior years take place on Tuesday afternoons. Pupils selected for matches are expected to play, join match tea and support visiting teams. Parents are warmly welcomed at all fixtures.

After school

Whether you need after school care, or just want your child to be active after school, we’ve got an extensive range of extra-curricular clubs, sports, arts and activities to keep any child engaged.

Curriculum

Pupils build strong academic foundations through a rich, stimulating and child‑centred curriculum led by form teachers who know each child well.

Each morning includes an hour of English and an hour of Mathematics. The wider curriculum includes French, Spanish, History, Geography, Science, Religious Studies, Art, Latin, Music, Engineering, Coding, Drama, PE, Swimming and Games.

Learning follows a project‑based approach linking different subjects through meaningful themes. Pupils investigate questions, test ideas, discuss and challenge one another and apply learning to real‑world contexts. Projects are enriched through trips, guest speakers, workshops and use of the innovation studio.

Boarding at S. Anselm’s opens up a world of friendship and adventure.

For Junior Prep pupils, boarding offers far more than simply a place to sleep – it provides a lively, nurturing community where children thrive and create lasting memories.
